Motor Racing in China

Motor Racing is fast gaining momentum in China especially with the country's hosting of The Chinese Grand Prix - Formula 1's racing event annually held at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The inaugural Chinese Grand Prix was held on September 26, 2004. The race was won by Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari). Meanwhile, Jenson Button of BAR-Honda and Kimi Räikkönen of McLaren-Mercedes finished second and third respectively.

Since then, the Chinese Grand Prix is usually held in late September or early October.

The Shanghai International Circuit is located in the district of Jiading, near Shanghai. Estimates show that the racing venue cost about $450 million. Architectural and design experts began planning and visiting the site between April and May 2003, and the area was transformed from swampland to international racetrack within 18 months with a team of 3000 engineers working around the clock.

The 2006 Chinese Grand Prix was memorable for Michael Schumacher and Ferrari fans, as Schumacher claimed the checkered flag, which was to be his last Formula 1 victory before retiring.

Betting on motor racing is similar to betting on golf. The most basic wager involves picking the winner of a race. Typically a sports book will list 20 or more individual drivers along with a field (all others) option, at various odds.
