English Premier League

The Premier League is the English professional league for football clubs (much like the Major League Soccer in the US).

The Premier League undertakes the Barclays Premier League - England's primary football competition, contested by 20 clubs. The football season usually starts around August and lasts up to May. Each team play 38 games during the course of the entire season. It is sponsored by Barclays Bank, thus it is referred to as the Barclays Premier League.

Since its inception in 1992, the Premier League has since become one of the world's most watched sporting league. In fact, it is the world's most lucrative football league, with combined club revenues of about $3.15 billion in 2007-08.

A total of 43 clubs have competed in the Premier League, but only four have won the title: Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

The most recent champions, Manchester United, won their eleventh Premier League title in the 2008-09 season. It is the most for any Premier League team.
